KS3 Book Levelling

This is designed to support Wave 3 Individualised Literacy Interventions ( formerly SAIL) in Somerset Secondary and Middle schools.

This is a list built from contributions submitted by Somerset Secondary Schools, for Somerset Secondary Schools. We would like to thank the many schools who have supported this project.

We provide the levels based on the information submitted by schools, and it is not independently verified, so be aware that it could be prone to minor inaccuracies, although none have been drawn to our attention.

The books are placed within 40 levels. Although these levels do not correspond to publishers’ levels you can approximate the first ten levels as being for pupils with reading ages below 5 years, the next ten levels for pupils with reading ages of 5 to 6 years etc.

Training for Individualised Literacy Interventions is organised in each area and information is circulated to SENCOs by the Learning Support Service. There are also regular Refresher training sessions to update staff.

Further information is available from your learning support service advisory teacher

How to Use it

You can use the list to find the levels of titles in your school, for pupils with reading ages from below 5 years to 9+ years, which they can read at an instructional level. ( An instructional book is one that can be read at 90% accuracy, which is identified through use of a running record).
You can view the whole list and see all the titles – this number is continually growing, currently around 6,000 books.
You can search the whole list for books at a specific level or within a range of levels.
You can also submit titles using the levelling form and guidance. Each book takes about 10 minutes to level. For information about how to level a book, click on ‘Submit a book levelling’ below and follow the guide. By clicking on ‘help’ you will find details about how to level the book.
